 “Does the job” 2009-12-31
By Robert N. Francis (Gresham, OR)

I bought this model because I knew I would not use one if I had to use a chest strap with it. When I got it I thought it was defective because it only has one silver button (below the display). I guess this is just the newer model and only requires one finger to get a reading. It always gives me a reading within 2-3 seconds. I use it during my p90x workouts so there is usually a short interval between sets when I can press the button. I have even pressed it while doing some cardio and I am still able to get a reading within a couple of seconds.

It seems to be pretty accurate as I have tested it against a manual reading with a stop watch. It does look a little better in the picture as the white around the edges in person is kind of ugly. But it does seem durable and reliable so I am happy with it. I will probably try to figure out the calorie counter and pedometer this week. If it wasn’t for the white around the sides I would have rated it a five. If you’re looking for a reliable strapless monitor, this is a good one for 50 bucks.

 “works great” 2009-11-12
By L. Doll (Atlanta, GA)
My husband bought this unit almost a year ago, when another brand he was using quit working. this has been working great for him. I started using it a few weeks ago, and have been please with it’s performance. The strap is comfortable, and the monitor is fairly acurate and easy to read. It is nice to have your heart rate displayed constantly, without having to stop and push a button. So far, it is wearing very well. Nothing is broken, and after a year, it is still displaying the correct heart rate. The other unit we bought earlier, was cheaper, and died after just a year. The strap just needs a little water on it before straping it on, like others of its kind. But, once on, it is not noticable at all. I have liked this so much, that I am buying one for each of our daughters for Christmas this year.

“Stopped working in under a year” 2009-06-29
By L. buyka
It worked fine for a while, even without interference from machines at the gym. Before a year was up, it stopped working. The watch part still works, but the strap doesn’t transmit any data. I have replaced both batteries and still, nothing. I would have expected more especially since I didn’t beat it to death and wear it every day

 “Works Great!” 2009-05-29
By M. Schrag (Dolores, CO)
I bought a black one for myself and liked it so much I bought this model for my wife. Easy to use, heart rate seems reliable, and has just enough features for our purposes. But, if you’re looking for a larger watch or have large wrists, this is not the watch to choose.

 “Had to return it…” 2009-05-19
By Cinnamongirli (California)
I bought and used it for about 5 weeks, everyday. After pushing buttons for hours, I finally got it set up with my details and it worked great, for a couple of weeks. Then, it stopped counting the calories (one of the main reasons I wanted this gadget). The next day, it seemed to work again so off I went for another few weeks of daily workouts and calorie burn. Then, it stopped counting calories again and never counted another calorie after that. All the other functions seemed to work fine but the calories were zero every day for days. I finally sent it back and am searching for a replacement. Darn!

 “Excellent tool” 2009-12-12
By J. Carouth (College Station, TX USA)
I purchased this heart rate monitor to offer more metric points than my Sigma PC15 offered. Most importantly this monitor is capable of tracking the average heart rate over a given interval. I use it to monitor my speed work and interval training and to track my recovery times to give me a heads up of any potential over training.

The quality of this product is excellent and I would recommend anyone who wants a serious non-GPS heart rate monitor to purchase one. I use it in areas that my old HRM would lose signal due to interference without a single glitch yet.

“agree with other raters - 2 new points to add” 2009-12-04
By D. Karkut (Vancouver, BC)
I agreee with the comments from the other raters, and I generally like the watch except for 2 other important criticisms.

First, it’s annoying that the out-of-zone heart rate warning can’t be turned on or off easily, especially during a run. To turn the alarm on, you have to push the buttons 23 times to get to this option - I’m not joking - I counted. It’s 6 pushes to get to HRM Set Up from the start screen; 1 push on Set; then 15 pushes to cycle through to HR ZONE ALERT on-off option toggle; 1 push to enable! You need to do this 23 push tango to enable and to disable the alert. Try to do this while running to understand annoying. If you just leave the alert on, the watch will beep anytime you’re exercising out of zone. My old watch had a 1-press on/off alert. Timex messed this up big-time.

The second quibble is that the monitor does not report accurately at the start of a run. It does seem correct when I just put the monitor on my chest; however, I get too-high readings (115% max heart rate, e.g,) until about 5-10 minutes into the run. I’d say it’s because that’s how long it takes for the contact/sweat to give good readings, but if that’s the reason, why the correct readings right away?

If anyone has solutions/explanations for me, please report them in another comment.

 “better than polar” 2009-10-21

It looks better than a Polar, is lighter and more user-friendly system, it is very easy to program. Excellent condition. I had a Polar and had trouble because he broke in 2 occasions, also lost its original color.

“Triathlon name is misnomer - but good monitor otherwise” 2009-10-13
By Wiley
The watch has “Triathlon” below the Ironman label, and the manual states it is a triathlon training tool. However, this monitor will not work while swimming. It is an excellent tool for cycling and running, and the review mode is very helpful in recording workout information. I called Timex when the heart rate monitor failed to function in the pool after re-reading the manual to see if the problem could be pilot error. Instead, Timex warranty personnel told me the watch did not work while swimming and was not intended to and there was nothing they could do about the problem. (Not very courteous in providing that information as well.) He also added none of the monitors will work in water. This is incorrect as Polar monitors work quite well while swimming. At the advertised price on Amazon, this is a very good value, and if you don’t need it for swimming, it is very good. I bought the monitor specifically for cycling and swimming, and I still considered keeping it because the other features of the watch are excellent.

“doesn’t work most of the time” 2008-10-06
By Jessica L. Armbruster
Very disappointed, the heart rate monitor almost never works especially when I am working out. Not worth the money. If you buy it from Amazon good luck trying to return it! Customer service barely spook english and didn’t understand my basic questions. I am sending it back but don’t know if I will get my money back. They said maybe 80% and the watch doesn’t even work!

“Great No Hassle HRM with extras” 2008-08-31
By B. Marcoux
Got this because chest straps are irritating, and this is a much more convienent substitute. Only complaint is that it can take a few seconds to grab your HR - but well worth it for the convienence. Plus the other features (calorie measure etc.) are a nice bonus.

 “Really Unhappy “ 2008-07-27
By Walter F. Johnston
None of my expectations of this product were met except that tells the time of day. I find it IMPOSSIBLE to get readings when I’m running unless I actually stop (and not even then all the time). GREAT, huh? Also, it is such an awkward motion to try to get a reading when I’m running because I have to reach over to the other side of my body, make sure the watch is at a low a position as possible and hold the buttons down for anywhere from 4 to 15 seconds. I haven’t even been able to get a reading then. If you think that doesn’t throw your running continuity and form off, try it sometime (particularly when you’re trying to check your pulse when your racing). I’ll probably eat the $100 I paid because of shipping (they said it was free shipping, but NOT IF YOU’RE SHIPPING IT BACK. THEY WIND UP CHARGING YOU FOR SHIPPING BOTH WAYS) and restocking costs. What’s my humorous reaction, ‘Mama MIO’, but believe me I’m not happy. Don’t bother buying this one.

“It broke after 1 year of use” 2008-07-15
By E. Tyler (Poughkeepsie, NY United States)
I loved this watch. I used it a lot last summer while training for my first 5k. The run/walk timer was perfect for me.

My husband used it at the gym a few times over the winter and now it’s summer again and I am back into running outside. I stole it back from him and noticed it was dead. No biggie, replaced the battery and it worked just fine. Except a few hours later - it died again. Tried another battery and still nothing. Looks like it’s garbage now as I am outside the 1 year warranty period by 3 months.

I am VERY disappointed.

 “It’s going back! “ 2008-01-24
By Phillip J. White (Plymouth, MI)
I am a little surprised by some of the GREAT reviews that I have found on the internet regarding this unit. I received it for Christmas this year and have used it 10 times now while running and the P90X program I am doing. I have to say for ME, dead nuts accurate readings,(within 1%) I give it a “A-” for that. I never had a problem getting a quick accurate reading, The problem is can you read it??

For engineering and functionality it gets a “D”. I’m an engineer so maybe I am a little tougher to impress, but I was VERY disappointed with the design.

To start with, I have 20/10 vision (better than average) and in normal light, lighting at the gym, or in my basement where I run the treadmill the numbers are almost impossible to read. The numbers on the LCD are too close together, for instance, a heart rate of 152 is easily mistaken for 162 ,even by my 13yo son who has eagle eyes. He said to me one day while wearing it “how do you read this thing?”

The display has a “Indiglo” type backlight, however, I found that if you turn on the light and then take a pulse reading, the light goes out before you can get a reading. And, if you take a pulse reading and then hit the light you might just be able to catch the reading before you lose the light. You are suppose to be able to extent the light by 2 secs by hitting any button while the light is on, that never worked for me.

The better design would be to have the pulse reading come full screen with another touch of a button, OR just a larger display period.

Being an engineer I know quite often they get locked into the one aspect of the product that they are working on without looking at the over all larger picture, that being “Is It Usable!” The other features seemed to work fine, but again, if you can’t read it what good is it. I was very frustrated by the lack of forethought.
