By Karlacr (SJ, Costa Rica)
This is the watch that I was looking for. It is great. It works as it says and it means that was specially made for me.
The size is great, the color beautiful and it is so easy to use all the functions that it has.

I got this for my biking but have been using it swimming too. Does what i want with bells and whistles what i don’t need. Nice having the time too. A bit tight for my wrists but I’m enjoying it.

“Stopped working in under a year” 2009-06-29
By L. buyka
It worked fine for a while, even without interference from machines at the gym. Before a year was up, it stopped working. The watch part still works, but the strap doesn’t transmit any data. I have replaced both batteries and still, nothing. I would have expected more especially since I didn’t beat it to death and wear it every day

 “Works Great!” 2009-05-29
By M. Schrag (Dolores, CO)
I bought a black one for myself and liked it so much I bought this model for my wife. Easy to use, heart rate seems reliable, and has just enough features for our purposes. But, if you’re looking for a larger watch or have large wrists, this is not the watch to choose.

 “Had to return it…” 2009-05-19
By Cinnamongirli (California)
I bought and used it for about 5 weeks, everyday. After pushing buttons for hours, I finally got it set up with my details and it worked great, for a couple of weeks. Then, it stopped counting the calories (one of the main reasons I wanted this gadget). The next day, it seemed to work again so off I went for another few weeks of daily workouts and calorie burn. Then, it stopped counting calories again and never counted another calorie after that. All the other functions seemed to work fine but the calories were zero every day for days. I finally sent it back and am searching for a replacement. Darn!

 “Excellent tool” 2009-12-12
By J. Carouth (College Station, TX USA)
I purchased this heart rate monitor to offer more metric points than my Sigma PC15 offered. Most importantly this monitor is capable of tracking the average heart rate over a given interval. I use it to monitor my speed work and interval training and to track my recovery times to give me a heads up of any potential over training.

The quality of this product is excellent and I would recommend anyone who wants a serious non-GPS heart rate monitor to purchase one. I use it in areas that my old HRM would lose signal due to interference without a single glitch yet.

“agree with other raters - 2 new points to add” 2009-12-04
By D. Karkut (Vancouver, BC)
I agreee with the comments from the other raters, and I generally like the watch except for 2 other important criticisms.

First, it’s annoying that the out-of-zone heart rate warning can’t be turned on or off easily, especially during a run. To turn the alarm on, you have to push the buttons 23 times to get to this option - I’m not joking - I counted. It’s 6 pushes to get to HRM Set Up from the start screen; 1 push on Set; then 15 pushes to cycle through to HR ZONE ALERT on-off option toggle; 1 push to enable! You need to do this 23 push tango to enable and to disable the alert. Try to do this while running to understand annoying. If you just leave the alert on, the watch will beep anytime you’re exercising out of zone. My old watch had a 1-press on/off alert. Timex messed this up big-time.

The second quibble is that the monitor does not report accurately at the start of a run. It does seem correct when I just put the monitor on my chest; however, I get too-high readings (115% max heart rate, e.g,) until about 5-10 minutes into the run. I’d say it’s because that’s how long it takes for the contact/sweat to give good readings, but if that’s the reason, why the correct readings right away?

If anyone has solutions/explanations for me, please report them in another comment.

 “better than polar” 2009-10-21

It looks better than a Polar, is lighter and more user-friendly system, it is very easy to program. Excellent condition. I had a Polar and had trouble because he broke in 2 occasions, also lost its original color.

“Triathlon name is misnomer - but good monitor otherwise” 2009-10-13
By Wiley
The watch has “Triathlon” below the Ironman label, and the manual states it is a triathlon training tool. However, this monitor will not work while swimming. It is an excellent tool for cycling and running, and the review mode is very helpful in recording workout information. I called Timex when the heart rate monitor failed to function in the pool after re-reading the manual to see if the problem could be pilot error. Instead, Timex warranty personnel told me the watch did not work while swimming and was not intended to and there was nothing they could do about the problem. (Not very courteous in providing that information as well.) He also added none of the monitors will work in water. This is incorrect as Polar monitors work quite well while swimming. At the advertised price on Amazon, this is a very good value, and if you don’t need it for swimming, it is very good. I bought the monitor specifically for cycling and swimming, and I still considered keeping it because the other features of the watch are excellent.

You are required to wear a strap around your torso. I didn’t realize that until I tried to use the item. Works great.

“Inexpensive and easy to use” 2009-11-30
By Shirley F. Graves (Mentor, OH USA)
Great tool to help me reach my target heart rate and maximize my cardio workouts. I recently started back on a workout routine and needed an inexpensive and easy to use heart rate monitor watch that would allow me to monitor my heart rate, handsfree, during my cardio work out at the gym. This watch has the basic funtionality that I need plus work out equipment at the gym picks up the signal and displays on the screen so I don’t have to keep looking at my wrist.

 “Great for a few months, but…” 2009-11-18
By Jared
This was $30 in Jan ‘09. I bought it to track my HR during the P90X program. It worked great for a few months giving me the basic features I needed; time, avg HR and Peak HR. I took a few months off of P90X and used it only a few times over the next few months. I recently started the P90X program again and a couple weeks into the program with daily use, the transmitter just stopped working. I replaced the battery, but still nothing. Fortunately I bought a 1 year warranty, so I was able to get a full refund. I will not buy this product or brand again. I hope this helps.

 “Great Place to Start” 2009-11-01
By Dan Kellackey
My wife and I purchased this watch in Dick’s at the end of July this year. We just started jogging after reading the book “Younger Next Year”. We are new to using H.R. in training, so we didn’t want to spend on all the bells and whistles. It tracks average and peak, and the current elapsed time is easy to call up when exercising. I have occasionaly trouble getting the watch synching with the strap, but my wife never has problems. Recently I switch from wetting the HR strap to wetting my chest instead, and it has helped. The funny thing is that our Sole E35 Elliptical ALWAYS picks up the HR signal from the Timex strap, so I know that is not what causes the occasional glitches. I would recommend it for others who are just getting started. After using for several months, I wouldn’t pay another $50 for a few more features.

“Mainly okay but it could use some improvement” 2009-12-02
By SmokeStack (North Georgia)
The package for monitoring heart rate is okay. Not great but it does get the job done, so in that regard, it gets a thumbs up rating from me but not thumbs real high up. The chest strap is a little cumbersome to attach in that it does not do so easily. You have to get this small tooth inside the attach ring then adjust accordingly until you have a click and fit. That’s a bit tenuous but perhaps par for the course? Then too, the chest strap tends to sag (Even when attached snuggly before the fact) during heavy exercise so you find yourself having to ‘pull it up’ so to speak to the desired location under the heart.

Next, the wrist clock/monitor itself does not register immediately. I’ve since gotten accustomed to this foible but in the beginning was wondering if something was amiss. Until one’s heart starts to increase its activity under physical stress of some kind, all one gets is a —- on the clock face until it toggles to the time of day. My resting heart rate is about 40-44 and the unit wouldn’t start tracking until I broke the 54-55 mark, so keep that in mind when you first use the device.

My workouts are usually, but not always, a combination of anaerobic (weight training) and aerobic (elyptical machine). It’s helpful to know where you are with each and the monitoring device is effective in each instance. Intersting to note that the aerobic machine I use at the gym automatically senses the chest strap readings and its pulse rate reports are consistent with the wrist monitor. I think, given a choice to unring the purchase, I might opt for the wrist type only readout device but, having no experience with those or their accuracy, am ‘kind of’ pleased with this unit.

 “Happy Customer” 2009-12-01
By Paul Chamberlin
The Timex T5G971 has proved to be a very satisfactory replacement for the 6-year old Timex Ironman Triathlon that I bought in 2003.
I like the relatively small size of the T5G971 as well as its light weight and feedback features, which provide such workout details as peak heartrate, time in the target pulse range, calories burned and recovery data. While I miss the chronograph feature of the 2003 Ironman Triathlon, its absence is not a show stopper.
The Amazon shopping experience was also very satisfactory. A day after placing the order for relatively slow shipping, I needed to accelerate the delivery time. Amazon customer service was exceptionally responsive, and I received the watch a little earlier than the revised delivery request.

 “Disappointed” 2009-11-23
By Willard Smith (DC)
I bought this item to replace a Nike heart rate monitor. I don’t like the Timex much because it’s less solid than my previous watch (plastic feel) and has a lot less flexibility/fewer functions. It does estimate how many calories you’ve burned. If that’s all your after, it could be a good choice.

 “Good watch” 2009-11-23
By Penny!
My boyfriend and I both use this monitor both running and at the gym and it tells us everything that we need to know. If you’re looking for something that will keep track of your progress, look elsewhere as this monitor only deals with one workout at a time (if you start a workout, the previous session details erase). Also, if you have small wrists, the band may be too large for you. I wish this one had one more hole…

 “Not Pleased” 2009-11-22

Heart Rate feature only worked occasionaly. May have just been battery but they shouldn’t send them out with old battery. Watch band looked very cheap. The plastic band will not last long.
