Whether you’re a hardcore adventure hiker, an avid runner, or simply looking to count your doctor’s recommended 10k steps a day, an Accelerator Series watch fits the bill. Advanced accelerometer technology provides highly accurate readings of a user’s speed, distance, and caloric expenditure via a simple wrist watch sensor, eliminating the need for funny looking foot pods or belt clips. Accelerometer technology is 95+% accurate, and much more dependable than traditional pendulum based pedometers. GPS-based running products are very expensive, complicated, and aren’t reliable for indoor training or under heavy tree cover. The Accelerator Series is the perfect combination of accurate readings, simplicity of use, and stylish design.

Speed & Distance Pedometer

  • Highly accurate step counter with adjustable sensitivity allows users to tune the sensors to their individual walking style. Doctors everywhere are now recommending 10k steps a day to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
  • All sensors are contained in a simple wrist watch. That means no funny looking mechanical belt clips our funky shoe pods.
  • Get off the beaten path! Free yourself from mileage markers at the track or trail! Pick a new route every day! The Accelerator can automatically distinguish between running and walking, and can calculate your average speed, distance, caloric expenditure, and total exercise time.
  • The Accelerator has a delayed step counter feature that differentiates between ancillary movements and actual steps. This feature provides users with the most accurate results by delaying calculation until it has registered 10 steps in a row to eliminate false step counting.
  • The smart scheduling features allows users to set the pedometer to automatically start/stop counting steps at a predetermined time every day, so you’ll never forget to turn it on.

Personal Profile

  • This feature allows users to customize their watch to their specific body type and walking/running style. No matter how fast or slow, tall or short, each user can personally enter their weight, average walking stride, and average running stride in order to ensure accurate results.
  • Hikers can easily account for loaded pack weights.
  • Runners can dial in the stride length to account for varying terrain and/or speed workouts.
  • Quickly adjust weight and stride lengths as conditioning improves.

Chronograph

  • The accelerator series’ powerful stopwatch features allow users to record exact results to within 1/100th of a second for up to 50 laps and a total time of 24 hours.
  • Although the watch has several advanced ways of calculating speed and distance, the old-school chronograph still has a place and purpose.

Countdown Timer

  • A simple countdown timer can come in real handy at times. Set it for 10 minutes as a quick reminder. Use it to monitor your running/walking pace and set speed goals. Alternative Time Zone
  • Great for those that travel! Allows users to set and display an alternative time zone along with the current home time display. Never lose track of time no matter where you are.

Daily Alarm Mode

  • We are all creatures of habit in our daily routines. The daily alarm is a great way to set a daily reminder or morning wake up alarm.

How the Technology Works
The underlying technology in the Accelerator Series Watches is an accelerometer sensor. Accelerometers are used to measure acceleration. Originally developed during the Space Race to replace outdated gyroscopes, accelerometers can be found in a diverse range of today’s products such as automobile air bags and tilt meters. In the Accelerator watch, a user’s movement (acceleration) produces varying degrees of electric current within the sensor, allowing the watch to detect different levels of acceleration, and therefore measure speed and distance.

Another way to explain how an accelerometer sensor works is to envision a marble in a bowl. When the bowl is moved, or accelerated, the marble inside will roll (accelerate) along the bottom and sides of the bowl. When the bowl is accelerated faster, the marble will move a greater distance up the sides. The accelerometer sensor in the Accelerator Series watch acts like an electronic marble in a bowl. With every step forward, the wearer of the watch (bowl) is accelerating forward. By measuring the acceleration of the “marble”, the software inside the watch can then calculate the wearer’s speed and distance.

The Competition
There are really only a few different ways to calculate the speed and distance of human-powered, on-foot travel. The first was basic math, next came the mechanical pedometer, followed by satellite tracking GPS years later. Mechanical pedometers are cheap and abundant, but also highly unreliable. They operate on a simply pendulum clicker that relies on the walker’s hip movement to count steps. Unfortunately, mechanical pedometers end up counting a lot of non-walking movements and assume that walkers are making consistent and repetitive steps.

GPS technology is impressive, but also expensive, complex, and not always ideal for outdoor activities or indoor training. Satellite signals can be lost in heavily forested areas, indoors, or behind large buildings and receiving signals eats up batteries. When a good signal can be found, often the device does not receive info often enough to account for twisty backcountry trails.

The Future
The Tech 4 O Accelerator Series fills the void between old mechanical pedometers and the overkill of GPS. A simple, yet versatile, wrist-watch design can provide extremely accurate speed and distance data in all conditions.

“Gets the job done for the price” 2009-11-11
By Cultural Groupie (Bermuda)
I bought this watch because my Nike+ iPod thing broke, and I’m waiting for Garmin to come out with a new version of their GPS watch (I live in a really humid climate and a lot of my friends have complained that the moisture screws up the screens..didn’t want to spend that much on it if it was defective). The Tech 4.0 Accelerator does basically what I wanted which is to track time & distance. I’ve worn it in pouring rain and stifling humidity, and the face is readable & the measurements reliable. Also I have tiny wrists, and it fits fine, the face is the perfect size, and the band tightens enough to be secure. This was another big concern I had with other running watches. My biggest complaint is that you can’t lock the face, so I’m always getting it out of my bag to find it tracking a workout that I’m not doing because of buttons getting pressed accidentally. It’s also a challenge to figure out how to work, and there’s a million features (like laps, chronometer, calories..) that I’m not using. Also I can’t figure out how to switch the distance feature from miles to kilometers, so I’m always having to convert. I haven’t had any problems with the band turning colors like other reviewers, so it still looks cute/pink to me.

Overall—better & more reliable than the Nike+ iPod system, but hard to initially figure out. If you take some time & learn how to use it, it works well. You definitely can’t just put it on your wrist & go for a run. It’s a $50 watch, so if you accept that it’s not going to be the greatest thing ever, I think you’ll be pleased with it.

 “Great watch” 2009-09-20

It’s a great watch it is pretty accurate for the price. If you take the time to callebrate it correctly it can be 95+% accurate. The best way is to go on the track and callebrate your steps or running stride there.

 “Love this watch!” 2009-09-04
By H. Greenfield (Dallas, TX)
I have had my pedometer watch for a few months now and I love it! It seems to be pretty accurate even on longer runs (12 miles). It is cute and not too big and has held up well even when wearing 5+ days a week.

 “Wished I hadn’t bought it…” 2009-01-10
By Anais (Akron, OH United States)
I own this watch and have never been able to get it to hold the pedometer function. I’m constantly having to reset it throughout the day because it freezes up and stops counting…and then it’s very difficult to program. It’s a waste of money.

“doesn’t work most of the time” 2008-10-06
By Jessica L. Armbruster
Very disappointed, the heart rate monitor almost never works especially when I am working out. Not worth the money. If you buy it from Amazon good luck trying to return it! Customer service barely spook english and didn’t understand my basic questions. I am sending it back but don’t know if I will get my money back. They said maybe 80% and the watch doesn’t even work!

“Great No Hassle HRM with extras” 2008-08-31
By B. Marcoux
Got this because chest straps are irritating, and this is a much more convienent substitute. Only complaint is that it can take a few seconds to grab your HR - but well worth it for the convienence. Plus the other features (calorie measure etc.) are a nice bonus.

 “Really Unhappy “ 2008-07-27
By Walter F. Johnston
None of my expectations of this product were met except that tells the time of day. I find it IMPOSSIBLE to get readings when I’m running unless I actually stop (and not even then all the time). GREAT, huh? Also, it is such an awkward motion to try to get a reading when I’m running because I have to reach over to the other side of my body, make sure the watch is at a low a position as possible and hold the buttons down for anywhere from 4 to 15 seconds. I haven’t even been able to get a reading then. If you think that doesn’t throw your running continuity and form off, try it sometime (particularly when you’re trying to check your pulse when your racing). I’ll probably eat the $100 I paid because of shipping (they said it was free shipping, but NOT IF YOU’RE SHIPPING IT BACK. THEY WIND UP CHARGING YOU FOR SHIPPING BOTH WAYS) and restocking costs. What’s my humorous reaction, ‘Mama MIO’, but believe me I’m not happy. Don’t bother buying this one.

“It broke after 1 year of use” 2008-07-15
By E. Tyler (Poughkeepsie, NY United States)
I loved this watch. I used it a lot last summer while training for my first 5k. The run/walk timer was perfect for me.

My husband used it at the gym a few times over the winter and now it’s summer again and I am back into running outside. I stole it back from him and noticed it was dead. No biggie, replaced the battery and it worked just fine. Except a few hours later - it died again. Tried another battery and still nothing. Looks like it’s garbage now as I am outside the 1 year warranty period by 3 months.

I am VERY disappointed.

 “It’s going back! “ 2008-01-24
By Phillip J. White (Plymouth, MI)
I am a little surprised by some of the GREAT reviews that I have found on the internet regarding this unit. I received it for Christmas this year and have used it 10 times now while running and the P90X program I am doing. I have to say for ME, dead nuts accurate readings,(within 1%) I give it a “A-” for that. I never had a problem getting a quick accurate reading, The problem is can you read it??

For engineering and functionality it gets a “D”. I’m an engineer so maybe I am a little tougher to impress, but I was VERY disappointed with the design.

To start with, I have 20/10 vision (better than average) and in normal light, lighting at the gym, or in my basement where I run the treadmill the numbers are almost impossible to read. The numbers on the LCD are too close together, for instance, a heart rate of 152 is easily mistaken for 162 ,even by my 13yo son who has eagle eyes. He said to me one day while wearing it “how do you read this thing?”

The display has a “Indiglo” type backlight, however, I found that if you turn on the light and then take a pulse reading, the light goes out before you can get a reading. And, if you take a pulse reading and then hit the light you might just be able to catch the reading before you lose the light. You are suppose to be able to extent the light by 2 secs by hitting any button while the light is on, that never worked for me.

The better design would be to have the pulse reading come full screen with another touch of a button, OR just a larger display period.

Being an engineer I know quite often they get locked into the one aspect of the product that they are working on without looking at the over all larger picture, that being “Is It Usable!” The other features seemed to work fine, but again, if you can’t read it what good is it. I was very frustrated by the lack of forethought.

 “Love it!” 2009-05-13
By Alana Foster (Washington, DC)
I love this thing! The custom zones are great. Had my zones and VO2 levels tested at the gym and my trainer was able to set the watch to MY zones. This also allows me to see a more accurate calorie count.

A couple notes that didn’t keep me from giving it 5 stars, but just to keep in mind:

1. The orange is MUCH brighter than on my screen. Think, street construction cone orange. It’s much more neon orange.

2. The G1 GPS Sensor is AWESOME on most days. I recently ran with it on a very cloudy/rainy day and it completely lost track of the signal. I haven’t used the footpod, so can’t compare, but I may end up buying it for use on cloudy days.
